Symbols to help with transitions.

Transitions occur when moving from activity to activity or place to place. This can be challenging for our pupils. To support transitions we have been using traffic light symbols around school. When an activity has started we show a green circle symbol and we say "....... has started". When an activity is nearing the end a yellow circle symbol is presented and we say "........ has nearly finished", this warning is really important to prepare a pupil for transition. When the activity has ended a red circle symbol is shown and the pupil is told "...... has finished".

If you want to try using traffic light symbols at home, start by using them in a familiar routine for example bath time or meal time. As your child becomes familiar with these symbols try them with trickier transitions. If you need any further support please contact a member of the Communication Team.
