We are looking forward to our summer term 'Bikeability' project over the coming weeks. Year 6 pupils will be working with Carole Sellars, myself and parent governor, Kevin Cartwright to learn the basics of cycling independently and safely. We have a good stock of bikes, including balance bikes, fixed gear BMX style bikes, and bikes with gears.
We will be teaching the children the 'coast and brake' method, which involves simply lowering the saddle to its lowest point, and removing the pedals, effectively turning the bike into a balance bike. This then allows the children to gain confidence and a sense of balance while keeping control of the bike with the brakes.
There are lots of useful videos on this method, and I have put one below which you may find useful
